president obama was first elected. he was elected on november 4th, 2008. and after the partisan combat of that election faded quickly and the country absorbed that this was going to be our new president of the united states, the approval ratings for barack obama soared. his approval rates went to 79%. by inauguration day 2009, nearly two million people would turn out on the national mall to see him sworn in. it was a heady, heady time whether or not you had voted for him. but of course that was not true for everybody. election day was november 4th. november 10th, so six days later, not even a week later, there was one republican congressman from georgia who was already denouncing the president-elect as both a marxist and a nazi. if you think about it, it's kind of a hard thing to pull off simultaneously, right? a marxist and a nazi? look at the time stamp here. november 10th, 2008. congressman paul broun of georgia telling the associated press already at that point that he, quote, fears that president-elect obama will establish a gestapo-like security force to impose a marxist dictator

years ago at this time when president obama was just starting his first term, news networks, including this one, made a somewhat unusual decision to show live on tv the arrival of one of the new cabinet secretaries at the department that she had just been appointed to lead. to broadcast live essentially a cabinet secretary's first day on the job. the reception that that cabinet secretary got that day was raucous. , austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in which we didn't come to a big deficit reduction deal. what we did is raise taxes. it cut the deficit a bit, but not a big deal. what happened to the markets? somehow we kept adding jobs and the stock market did really we

in common. republicans control the states legislatures and governor's mansions and president obama won the last two elections in those states. the scheme seemed to have crashed before they even began in most of those states. in florida, for example, top republicans have publicly backed away. in virginia a bill in the state senate was killed in committee. in ohio the republican governor indicated he was opposed. it's the same in michigan and wisconsin where even paul ryan recently said he was against the change. that leaves just one state for now, pennsylvania. and republicans there seem intent on going ahead. the senate majority leader says he will introduce legislation this month to change how the state's electoral votes are awarded. that woot mean instead of obama winning all of the state's 20 electoral votes, veld gotten only 12. it's another example of republicans trying to fight a demographic war that's going against them. will this latest scheme succeed? jim burn is the chairman of the democratic party of pennsylvania and eugene robinson is a columnist for "the washington post" a
